TrustFord Westbury Wipeout 2015 – Calling All Hands

Just a quick reminder that advance entries close on Friday (3/7) for the 2015 TrustFord Westbury Wipeout, which will take place at Blaise Castle a week on Monday (6th July).  With more than 180 of the 300 places already filled, there is no guarantee that entries will be available on the day (and advance entries will close early once all places are filled).  This challenging multi-terrain adventure run for youngsters aged 8 to 15 takes you on a tour of the woods, streams and hills of the Blaise Castle Estate.  Please see the 'Westbury Wipeout' Events page for full details and links.

Opportunities for Older Youngsters (15 – 18)

If you are a ‘regular’ youngster with the club, but just too old to participate, we are looking for some older youngsters (154 - 18) to run round ‘embedded’ in the run, looking out for problems and helping participants as necessary.  You get to do the event for free (but no T-Shirt or medal I’m afraid).  15 year-olds can opt to either enter to participate or help out. If you would like to do this, please turn up at the normal time and report to Nick Elliott (one of the girls’ leaders).

Helpers Needed – Please Please Please

A large event like this can only take place thanks to an army of volunteers – This Means You (parents and seniors).  If you can help on the night please let Carol know in advance.  Please give her your mobile phone number and when you can get there (the earlier the better).

Parking at a Premium

It is likely that the car park will be very busy, so allow extra time in case you have to walk.

Bristol Half Marathon – discounted club entries – deadline is close

The deadline for the discounted club entries to this year's Bristol Half Marathon is tomorrow, Saturday June 20th. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Bristol Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, 13th September 2015 and the organisers are once again offering clubs a big discount on entries. Up to 35% is available off the normal price meaning that if we get 20 members or more the entry fee will be £22.10 instead of £34 (plus a £3 online booking fee). In the unlikely event that we do not get 20 entrants, you will be asked to pay an additional fee, but this is not expected to be the case. So what’s the process you have to follow?

  • You must be a fully paid up member of the club.
  • You can pay using 3 different methods:
    • By PayPal – send a payment to geraint.torrington@blueyonder.co.uk for £22.10. Use the “I’m sending money to family or friends” and not “I’m paying for goods or services”– Geraint is not a merchant and will not accept any additional charges; if £22.10 is not on his account he will not process the entry. Send an email to bristol.half@westburyharriers.co.uk from the email address that you’d like the organisers to send your access code to indicating that you’ve paid via PayPal.
    • By bank transfer – Geraint’s bank details are GH & SE TORRINGTON, 30-93-53 00722429. Please make sure that you know the reference and send it in an email to bristol.half@westburyharriers.co.uk from the email address that you’d like the organisers to send your access code to.
    • Write a cheque made payable to Geraint Torrington for £22.10. Write your name, email address and contact number CLEARLY on the back. If these details are not on the back of the cheque or not clear your cheque will be returned.  Cash will not be accepted by Geraint. Give your cheque to club secretary Geraint Torrington on a Monday night (Geraint can’t generally make Thursdays) or post it to him at 41A Sherbourne Avenue, Bradley Stoke, Bristol, BS32 8DX
  • Entries need to be with Geraint by end of Saturday, June 20th 2015, no late entries will be accepted.
  • Geraint will send a confirmation email to the supplied email address to confirm that payment has been received. Please send an acknowledgement email back. If you do not receive a payment confirmation email within a week of sending your payment please get in touch with Geraint bristol.half@westburyharriers.co.uk
  • When the entries have been received and processed by Geraint they will be sent to the organisers in one block who will then send an email to the entrant with a code to use to bypass the payment screen on line. NOTE: Your entry to the race is NOT complete until you enter online. Sending the payment in does not mean you are entered.

If you can run sub 67.30 as a man or 77.00 as a woman you may be able to get an elite athlete place. From the runbristol website: HOW TO ENTER IF YOU ARE AN ELITE ATHLETE Places are reserved for elite athletes. Guide times: Men sub 67.30mins, Women sub 77mins (but we may also consider requests from up-and-coming young athletes). Please send a brief CV with your recent achievements and PB’s setting out your case for being given a reserved place to our race administration service who will pass your request on to Bud Baldaro for consideration. Blaise Blazer Results

With the appalling weather at the start of the week it was good to see Blaise Castle at its best for the first Blaise Blazer of 2015.

First home with a time of 22.56 was Oli Beale from Westbury Harriers. Oli is clearly in good form following his 34.31 run in the Bristol 10K. Alex Hamblin also continued his good form with second place with Alan Uren completing the podium positions.

The first vet home was vet 50 Mike Mcbeth of Southville Running Club in 7th position with first vet 40 Richard Noble of Westbury Harriers in 13th and first vet 60 was Mike Mewse also of Westbury Harriers in 20th position.

In the women’s race the first 3 women home were all vet 40 with Katie Hughes of Westbury Harriers leading them home in 11th position overall followed by Jane Colman of Bristol & West AC in 23rd and Maria Hobbs of Westbury Harriers in 28th.

The vet 40 prize for the women went to Helen Sawyer of Westbury Harriers in 39th place. The vet 50 prize went to Teresa Oakes of Southville Running Club in 49th and the vet prizes were complete by Marilyn Palmer of Westbury Harriers taking the vet 60 prize in 52nd place.

The full results are on the website.

The next race in the series will be on Thursday, July 2nd starting at 7.30pm at Blaise Castle. Online entries are available for the race.

Many thanks to all the marshals who made the race possible – without you there is no race.

Reception Group Newcomers Session

Having looked out the window and at tonight’s weather forecast and I think it best to cancel the session for the safety of the children.

We will complete the newcomers session and timed run next Monday (8/6) at Blaise – hopefully in sunshine……

Sorry for any disappointment or inconvenience but I think it is the right decision with heavy rain and dangerous winds on the way in.

I would consider running a coaching session for mixed abilities on Thursday from Coombe Dingle if enough are interested. Let me know before Wednesday evening and I will mail out again Wed eve or early Thursday if it is running.

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you all next Monday.

Best Wishes

Warren
