Discounted entry for the World Half Marathon Championship in Cardiff 2016

Exclusive offer for Westbury Harriers Members

I'm writing to you from Run 4 Wales, organisers of the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships 2016.

You may already be aware that the World Half Marathon Championships are being held in Wales, the first time in the UK since 2009. The event, set to be Wales' largest Athletic event since the 1958 Commonwealth Games will see 250 of the world's best distance runners from over 50 countries battle it out for the title of World Champion.

To make the event even more special a mass participation race will take place at the same time, giving runners the unique opportunity to run in the footsteps of champions. With a limited capacity of 25,000 spaces up for grabs in the mass race, demand is already high for the chance to run a world-class championship course alongside world-renowned runners and entries are expected to sell out. Pre-registration places sold out in 25 minues!

There is an exclusive mass entry offer available to club runners affiliated with Welsh Athletics, Scottish Athletics, England Athletics and Northern Ireland Athletics. Members can sign up for only £49, a saving of £10 and even more reason to get involved in this once in a lifetime running experience.

Your club members can take advantage of this offer by simply following the relevant links below, which can be passed on via email.

For those affiliated to Welsh Athletics: Click Here.

For those affiliated to England, Scottish or Northern Ireland Athletics: Click Here

Please note there are less than 1,000 discounted entries available so we recommend that runners sign up ASAP to avoid disappointment, all entries will be validated by the appropriate national bodies.

Kind regards,

Lee Treadwell

Kings Weston junior parkrun to launch on Sunday 23 August

Exciting news - the first Kings Weston junior parkrun, led by Westbury's Reception Co-ordinator, Warren Pickles, will be held at 10 am on Sunday 23 August outside Kings Weston House.

The event is a free, 2K timed run for 4 to 14-year-olds, with a focus on participation rather than competition: all abilities are very welcome.

There will be a test event on Sunday 16 August for anyone who wants to come and see what the event is all about, or have a go at volunteering – please register on the parkrun website and let Warren know that you plan to attend.

Warren still needs a few more members to join his core team and help deliver the event once every six weeks or so (or more regularly, if desired), so please do get in touch ( if you, or anyone you know, might be able to help.

More details will also be available on Facebook soon, but in the meantime, please put the date in your diaries and spread the word!

European silver for Steph

Biathle Portugal July2015 033After securing her place on the GB Biathle squad in May, Steph Cummins can now add a European silver medal to her collection after a fantastic race at the European Championships in Setubal, Portgual last weekend.

Despite temperatures averaging 30°C, Steph completed the distance (a continuous 1K run, 200m open water swim and 1K run) in 9:56.06, just nine seconds behind fellow GB competitor Alexandra Withey. Portugal took bronze.

Steph’s placing means she has automatically qualified to compete in the World Biathle Championships which are due to be held in Batumi, Georgia in September.

Huge congratulations to Steph!

Avon and Midlands Road Relays – dates for your diary

Relay races are always great fun, and there’s not one, but two, such events coming up soon.

Firstly, the Avon 5K road relays will take place on Sunday 30 August at Cleeve Cricket Club. After a good Westbury turnout for the inaugural staging last year, we hope to once again field a handful of teams this summer (four per team in the Senior Men and MV40 categories, and three per team in the U20, MV50, MV60 and all Womens categories).

Secondly, the Midlands six- and four-stage road relays will be held on Saturday 19 September in Sutton Park, Birmingham. The men’s event comprises six loops of 5.8K, while the women run four loops of 4.3K.

Please contact your team manager, Robin ( or Tamsin ( if you are able to take part in either (or both) of these events – the more the merrier!

Gwent cross-country league 2015/16 – dates for your diary

We may still be waiting for the Great British summer to finally arrive, but it’s already time to pop the dates of next season’s Gwent cross-country league in your diary.

Whichever group you usually run with on a Monday, do get involved – cross-country isn’t about chasing times, it’s about chasing the runner in front, and there’s always a fantastic team spirit at each fixture. Everyone who takes part scores for the team, their age group team and individually, and there are junior races for youngsters aged nine or over too.

The 2015/16 fixtures are as follows:

  • Sunday 11 October 2015 - Newbridge Fields, Bridgend
  • Sunday 8 November 2015 - Llandaff Fields, Cardiff
  • Saturday 5 December 2015 - Blaise Castle, Bristol (our home fixture)
  • Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 February 2016 - Abergavenny (tbc)
  • Saturday 5 March 2016 - Brecon Leisure Centre, Penlan (tbc)

The ladies’ races are usually around 6K while the mens’ races are usually between 8 and 10K.

You don’t need to enter in advance – entries are payable on the day (usually £4), and we can easily put you in touch with someone to share lifts if needed.

Last year, we celebrated a number of fantastic individual and team performances in the Gwent League so let’s make this season another good one for Westbury!

If you’d like to know more about cross-country, please contact your team manager, Robin ( or Tamsin (

If you'd like to take part in the junior races, or have a youngster interested in representing the club at junior level, please contact Simon ( or Neil (

Inter Club Avon AA Mob Match Friday 17th July

Inter club Avon AA mob match this Friday night, 17th July at Greville Smyth park, Ashton at 7.30pm along the towpath course. We had 70 club members running at Bristol 10km and we want to see a big number like this turn out for this fun, FREE race. We did well at the 5km mob match and would be great to repeat that success. So if you have a Westbury vest and can run 10km (which is all of you!) please come and join in, all you need to do is turn up on the night.   Alex Miller is kindly organising some refreshments for afterwards so look out for the Westbury base. Any questions do ask

Trio of Harriers in England Schools 1500m final

In a fantastic first for Westbury Harriers, three club members - Ellie Wallace, Hannah Hobbs and Ellie Leather -  qualified for the U17s 1500m final in the England Schools Athletics Association National Championships in Gateshead yesterday. All three girls went on to finish in the top seven - an absolutely brilliant result, and much-deserved after all their hard work and preparation.

4th Ellie Wallace 4:37.52
6th Hannah Hobbs 4:38.95
7th Ellie Leather 4:39.41

Ellie Leather had a particularly successful weekend, running not one but two PBs in 24 hours (the first in her qualifying heat on Friday), knocking six seconds off her previous best of 4:45.
Well done Ellie, Hannah and Ellie!

TrustFord Westbury Wipeout Results

Results from the 2015 TrustFord Westbury Wipeout can be found here: Westbury_Wipeout_2015_Results

We may have missed one or two out at the finish, so if your name is missing (or anything else is wrong) please email Neil at  For omissions, please let us know the vest numbers (or names) you finished just ahead of/behind.

We're sorry about the bottleneck on the 'Descent of Doom', but thank you everyone for your patience (and also for those who pulled our hare out of the swamp!)  A couple of the under 10 leaders may have missed a bit towards the end, but - hey - this was a fun run not a race, and the 'results' are for interest only.

If you have any comments or feedback on the event, please email Neil at

Photos from the Westbury Wipeout

Results from last night will follow, but here are some photos of some of the action.  A big thank-you to Carol and all the many helpers who made this event happen.
