Cross Country

Well done to everyone who ran at a warm and sunny Bridgend in the Gwent Cross Country League – a really good club turnout with some great running.

Novice Cross Country Runners    If you haven’t run a cross country race for a while – or never – it would be great to see you at Brecon on Saturday 12th November. The races are for a wide range of abilities and you may well help the club to collect some points. Even if you’re not into competitive races you’ll find it’s a good event socially.

I did my first cross country season only last year and really enjoyed the experience. I was very grateful for the advice from my Westbury clubmates  – so I’ve reproduced some of it below. Hope it helps.

Preparation Tips  1. Do a bit of training ! - 10k of muddy cross country can be testing ! 2. To enjoy the race it helps to have spikes or off road shoes with good grip. 3. Do a bit of practice in spikes beforehand – a few laps in a local park will do. For normal courses 12mm or 15 mm spikes are good. New spikes are pretty sharp so take care - and try to avoid treading on dogs or small children ! 4. Bring waterproofs, warm clothes and spare kit & footwear to wear after the race. A box / bag to put your muddy kit in is useful. 5. Refreshments are available to buy but a flask with a warm drink and some food is a good idea.

Brecon is a longish trip so lift sharing is a good option. Just ask at training.

I'm away for the next two weeks but if you decide to run in Brecon I'm sure the group leaders and experienced runners will help you out.

Championship Races

If you like racing in championships it’s a good time to plan your training and entries for the following events. There are age group and team categories. It would be great to get some medals for the club.

The Avon Championships – part of the Tri Counties (Somerset, Avon and Wiltshire) Cross Country Championships  - Sunday 11th December at Bath University.

The South West Cross Country Championships Sunday 8th January 2017 – Exeter Racecourse.

The South of England Cross Country Championships Saturday 28th January – London.

English National Cross Country Championships 11th March 2017 – Birmingham.

If you plan to run in championship events please let me know and I will try to coordinate entries and travel.

Aztec West 5k  - well done to everyone who raced on Tuesday night at Aztec. Some fast times !

Gwent League Results

The results of last week's first Gwent League fixture are now up on the Gwent League website.  A big well done to all 78 club members who took part - this must have been one of our  largest turn-outs ever for an away fixture.

We had no fewer than 3 individual winners - Abdi Hasan in the U15 boys, Dalis Jones in the U13 girls (and in her first Gwent league race), and Hannah Hobbs in the U17 women.  There were second places for Kate Howard, and Aidan Noble, while Elen Ruck, Tilly Spinney, Ellie Hobbs, Aidan Noble, Bryn Davies, Seamus Robinson and Emma Journeaux all finished in the top 10 of their various races.  Team-wise, our U15 boys and U13 girls head the standings.  Our senior women put out a strong squad and currently lie in 3rd place, while the under 20 men and U17 women are both in 2nd place.

Weston Prom Christmas Meal – Thursday 22nd December

Thursday 22nd December is the Weston Prom and afterwards a Christmas meal in the Brewers Fayre pub. All club members welcome. Always a really fun and sociable night. If you have not entered other prom races you can enter on the night. It is a flat 5 mile race along Weston's seafront promenade. It is well attended by local clubs, suitable for all abilities and reasonably priced.

Sandra Bailey-gard is taking the orders for the Christmas meal. It is £10.49 for 2 courses of £13.49 for 3 courses.
Starters - Tomato & roasted red pepper soup, breaded mushrooms, prawn cocktail or coarse pork pate
Mains - Roast turkey, beer battered fish & chips, brocoli & mushroom wellington, festive burger
Desserts - Christmas pudding, Christmas brownie, ice cream sundae with after eight or salted caramel profiteroles

Please give you money and order to Sandra Bailey-gard, who can be found at training most nights collecting the money.

Gwent Cross-Country League – Next Sunday, 16th October

Don't forget that cross-country starts up next Sunday (16th October) with the first Gwent League fixture, at Bridgend.  This is always a great event, and we hope to have plenty of runners out of all ages.  Age groups are 'defined' by the age on 31st August just gone (and stay the same all winter).  Events are as follows:
12:30   Under 11 Boys            1600m
12.40   Under 11 Girls            1600m
12.50   Under 13 Boys            2500m
13.05   Under 13 Girls            2500m
13.20   Senior Ladies             6600m
13.45   Under 15 Boys            4400m
14.00   Under 15 Girls            4400m
14.15   Under 17 / 20 Men    6600m
14.35   Under 17/20 Women  4800m
15.00   Senior Men                 10150m

Match fees are £1 for youngsters (under 20), and £4 for seniors, payable to your team manager on the day.  There is no 'selection' - simply the first 4 to finish score for the team.  We enter teams on the morning of the event, but it really helps to let your team manager know you are coming.  If you can run, (and we really hope as many as possible can), please email as appropriate:

Second Hand Kit Sale – Bring and Buy – Next Monday

We're holding a second hand kit sale at Coombe Dingle before/after training NEXT MONDAY, 10th October (UPSTAIRS in the orangery).   We'll be setting up from 6:30, and are keen to receive DONATIONS of outgrown or otherwise unwanted kit.

Especially popular with the cross-country season coming up are RUNNING SPIKES.  Outgrown CLUB VESTS always find a good home, but pretty much any CLEAN KIT would be of interest.

James and Kelly Winstone will be there from 6:30 until about 8:30 to SELL on all sorts of goodies from our existing stock and donations on the night.  So do please remember to bring along some spare change next Monday, and look for us upstairs in the orangery before or after training.
